What is Aadhaar eSign?

Aadhaar eSign is a government-authorized electronic signature service that allows any Aadhaar holder to digitally sign documents using OTP-based authentication. It leverages India's Aadhaar biometric infrastructure managed by UIDAI to verify the signer's identity in real-time.

When a signer initiates an Aadhaar eSign, an OTP is sent to the mobile number linked to their Aadhaar. Upon successful verification, a digital certificate is generated and attached to the document, making it legally valid under the Information Technology Act 2000.

Unlike traditional Digital Signature Certificates (DSCs) that require physical USB tokens, Aadhaar eSign is entirely paperless and remote — signers can sign from anywhere using just their Aadhaar number and registered mobile phone.

Legal Validity of Aadhaar eSign

Aadhaar eSign is a legally recognized electronic signature method under Indian law.

IT Act 2000, Section 3A

Section 3A of the Information Technology Act 2000 recognizes electronic signatures that use techniques specified by the Central Government. Aadhaar eSign is a notified technique under this section, making signatures executed via Aadhaar eSign legally valid and enforceable in Indian courts.

Equivalent to Handwritten Signatures

Under the IT Act, electronic signatures applied via Aadhaar eSign have the same legal standing as handwritten signatures on paper documents. Courts in India accept Aadhaar-eSigned documents as valid evidence, provided the audit trail and digital certificate are intact.

Government Authorized

The Aadhaar eSign service is authorized by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA), Government of India. The identity verification is performed by UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India), the government body responsible for Aadhaar. This provides a highly trusted and standardized method of identity verification for electronic signing.

Audit Trail & Evidence

Every Aadhaar eSign transaction generates a complete audit trail including signer identity (masked Aadhaar), timestamp, IP address, and digital certificate details. This tamper-proof record serves as evidence of the signing event and can be presented in legal proceedings.

Security & Privacy

Aadhaar eSign is built with multiple layers of security to protect signer identity and document integrity.

UIDAI Verified Identity

Signer identity is verified directly by UIDAI through the Aadhaar OTP mechanism. No third party has access to biometric data.

No Aadhaar Data Stored

FlowVerify does not store Aadhaar numbers or biometric information. Only a masked reference and the digital certificate are retained for the audit trail.

Time-Stamped Certificates

Each Aadhaar eSign transaction receives a time-stamped digital certificate that cryptographically binds the signer to the document at the exact time of signing.
